Smriti Irani, a famous Minister who was always on the radar of Mainstream Media. Media hounds her all the time and in return get thrashed always. She had did splendid job in HRD Ministry by restructuring the system and rewriting National Education Policy for the first time in 23 years.

After reshuffling done by Mr Prime Minister, She was shifted to Textile Ministry because that Ministry needs bold and aggressive leader and She too needs some peace, far away from Media as Media never touch Ministry like Textile.

The Indian textile industry is a multi-pronged machine, directly employing more than 45 million people, covering hand looms, handicrafts and power looms, cotton, silk and jute, the domestic market and exports, ancient know-how and new technology. There are the poetic aspects, and the thousands of seemingly mundane things that power them.

Smriti Zubin Irani, who took over as Minister of Textile has her work cut out. Power looms are phasing out weavers, traditional textile crafts are in danger of dying out, yarn prices are going up, and the market looks more inclined towards speed and quantity than the intricacy of warp and weft. Irani, though, is jumping into the deep end.

What is She doing in Textile Ministry since the reshuffle is the biggest question which needs to be answered?

  1. She is changing the complete landscape and bringing diversity in products being created in Textile Industry. The Ministry of Textiles caters to a composite structure, from yarn to fabric. The government has announced a Rs 6,000-crore package for the garment sector. She is mingling with designers and exceptional craftsmen to do justice with hard work done by Textile workers. She wants to bring Product diversification so that it can be sold Nationally as well as Internationally.
  2. She launched The #IWearHandloom campaign in August which went viral on social media, garnering 22 million impressions on Twitter alone, with everyone from Virender Sehwag to Sunil Sethi to Manish Malhotra tagging themselves. She made Textile reach to millions and created the sense of pride which ultimately leads to unprecedented increase in sale of Khadi and other products.
  3. She is working on to empower workers digitally so that they can get to its customers easily and decrease the cost too. There are many customers who love the art and craft but couldn’t afford high priced Textile products. She is working for both workers and customers. Today Almost all Digital Platforms and E-Commerce web portals like Flipkart, Snapdeal, Myntra, LimeRoad etc are providing separate section for Textile Industry and spreading the buzz of indigenous textile products.
  4. She is aiming to engage with Weavers Service Centres and the IGNOU and NIOS and facilitate the education of the children of weavers. At a time when soft skills assume such importance, She is partnering with the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.
  5. She wants to ensure that Weavers have a choice in terms of looms and Government will finance 90% of the cost of looms.
  6. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Indian Handloom brand last year where Garments labeled under this brand will fulfil certain quality parameters, environment parameters and social parameters like Child labour free. Currently 60 organic dyes and colours have been registered under this brand and many designers are coming forward to work with traditional weavers to launch products under this brand.
  7. IHB is in conversation with big retailers like Shoppers Stop, Westside, Biba and Globus etc to sale the textile products under IHB brand.
  8. NIFT is also under consultation to bring out pool of designers who can engage with Ministry of Textile who can bring out the best of weavers and textile workers.

Smriti Irani is famous for her aggressive work and strict implementation of policy and She is leaving no stone unturned to revive Indian Textile Industry.

Renaissance in Textile Industry is all set to come, which now no one can stop except her.
